Liposuction: Types and Results

"Im planning my next trip within six months of this one.  The whole experience is amazing.  From the moment I left New Zealand I felt so totally cared for.  Nothing was too much trouble for Penny and her Nip-Tuck team and the hospital, surgeons and medical services were really world-class.  There is nothing to compare to it in New Zealand.  And I got a holiday!"

Liposucton: Types of Liposcution & Results

Liposuction Overview:

Liposuction is a procedure that can help in removing small pockets of fat deposits, where diet and exercise have failed.  It does not require large incision sites and therefore there are few stitches or scars.  Areas that liposuction can help with, in particular, are:

  • ankles
  • inner and outer thighs
  • inner and outer arms
  • back
  • under chin and neck
  • male breast
  • contouring for waist, and back
  • tummy

During liposuction, small, thin, blunt-tipped tubes (cannula) are inserted through tiny cuts in the skin. Fat is suctioned out through these tubes as the surgeon moves the tubes around under the skin to target specific fat deposits.

TYPES OF LIPOSUCTION

In recent years, improved techniques have made liposuction safer, easier, and less painful. These newer techniques include:

  • Tumescent liposuction. A local anesthetic is used to numb the area of your body where the tube will be inserted. Next, a large amount of an anesthetic solution containing lidocaine and epinephrine is injected into the fatty tissue before traditional liposuction is done. Tumescent liposuction may not require general anesthesia (which makes you sleep through the procedure).  However, this is something to be discussed with your surgeon and this will generally depend on whether you feel comfortable under an LA and or the amount of areas of your body that the procedure will cover are concentrated in one small area or you are wanting more than one area covered and the time for the procedure is lengthy.   As an example:   You may want inner and outer arms and inner and outer thighs liposuctioned.   This may be a 3 hour procedure and so a LA will probably not be recommended by your surgeon.  But if you are just having your ankles liposuctioned and the procedure takes an hour, your surgeon may recommend LA.
  • Ultrasound-assisted liposuction. This technique uses ultrasound to liquefy the fat, which makes it easier to remove. This technique may be particularly helpful in removing fat from the neck, upper abdomen, sides, and back.
  • Laser-assisted liposuction. This technique uses low-energy waves to liquefy the fat, which is removed through a small cannula.

BEFORE AND AFTER

POST SURGERY:  WHAT TO EXPECT

Liposuction does not give an instant result.  Your body may take up several months to actually adjust to your final look.  It is important that you follow your surgeon's recommendation in regards to compression garments.  These will need to be worn for a certain period after surgery to help in the final result.

After liposuction, you will need to adjust your eating and exercise plan to ensure that your new look is retained.  If you have a tendency to eat large amounts of bad foods and drinks, then you will put the weight back on, unless you adjust your diet and exercise accordingly.

Remember, the main purpose of liposuction is to reshape one or more areas of your body, not to reduce huge amounts of body weight. Liposuction is typically used on "problem" areas that have not responded well to diet and exercise.

Liposuction may be used with other weight loss procedures, such as tummy tuck, or breast reduction.

It is always important to discuss your expectations of the final result you are aiming for, with your surgeon.  He will be able to recommend what he believes is right for you as an individual.
