Abdominoplasty or Liposuction

"Im planning my next trip within six months of this one.  The whole experience is amazing.  From the moment I left New Zealand I felt so totally cared for.  Nothing was too much trouble for Penny and her Nip-Tuck team and the hospital, surgeons and medical services were really world-class.  There is nothing to compare to it in New Zealand.  And I got a holiday!"

Abdominoplasty or Liposuction? Which is right for you?

Abdominoplasty or Liposuction?

Which is right for you?

Abdominoplasty or liposuction?  That is the question we are often asked by clients considering surgery to remove fat from the stomach.

There is no simple answer as everybody is different but I would like to outline some of the differences between abdominoplasty and liposuction that may make this decision easier for those wanting to know which is right for them.

Generally we advise that if there is a small amount of fat deposits that cannot be shifted from diet and exercise, alone, and you want to sculpt your body then liposuction is a good procedure for this.  The most the surgeons will extract is around 1.5 – 2.5 kg over the whole body. However, liposuction in itself will not remove large fat deposits and even if you just get liposuction it is advised that a strict diet and exercise regime be followed to maintain the new shape.  This is because the weight can be regained if lifestyle dictates lack of exercise and an unhealthy diet.

Also, if liposuction is to be performed on the stomach alone, depending on your age and fitness, a fold of skin may be left after the liposuction procedure.  The surgeons will explain this in more detail but if your underlining muscle and skin elasticity is not firm, your skin will not bounce back to cover the new shape and you will be left with skin folds.

If you are very young and don't have a lot of fat to remove liposuction is a good alternative.

However, because of the skin folds that develop for most people the surgeons suggest a combination of liposuction and abdominoplasty. This way the liposuction can sculpt around the waist and the maximum fat can be removed with abdominoplasty and the skin fold be tightened so that there is no excess skin fold left.  There will be some scaring but the surgeons try and make the incisions at a point that is below a bikini line and therefore hidden.  Also scaring is different for each person, so depending on your skin type scaring can be minimized with special ointments and moisturizers after the procedure.

Whichever procedure you think you may need, however, it is always advisable to consult with your surgeon and take their advice, as they are the experts.
