Gynecomastia / Male Breast Reduction

It is said that up to 50% of men will, at some point in their lives, have a problem with enlarged male breasts.  This is called gynecomastia. Many men are embarrassed by this but there is a treatment that can eliminate this problem and is safe to use on adults and teenagers.  The problem of gynecomastia may have been caused by genetics, or medications and can affect a male at any age, from teenage years on.

If you are experiencing embarrassment or feel uncomfortable with the appearance of your chest, this may cause you to feel you cannot participate in certain sports or in any action that requires you to display your chest, such as swimming or being at the beach.
Also, gynecomastia may be caused by a large weight increase and so if a course of diet and exercise is used can alleviate this somewhat.  But this is not a permanent solution as there may be gland tissue that still remains and shows even after weight loss.

A male breast reduction is the most effective known treatment for gynecomastia, or enlarged male breasts. This cosmetic surgery procedure removes excess fat and glandular tissue to restore a flatter, firmer and more masculine contour to the chest.  Male breast reduction offers the sufferer long lasting and permanent results.
There are two types of male breast reduction procedures.  These are:

Liposuction has the advantage that there is minimal scarring and less invasive than other forms of male breast reduction.  During this procedure your plastic surgeon will use advanced liposuction techniques that will remove excess fat from an incision point, either through the armpit or at a point close to the aerola.  At the same time he will sculpt your chest to give you a more pleasing male appearance.  After the procedure you will be required to wear a compression garment to help speed the healing process.

The healing process after the liposuction procedure is different for each person but typically your plastic surgeon will advise that it is possible to return to work that is not strenuous after two or three days.  Physical activity that is strenuous, eg. gym work, weights, carrying loads, will typically be off limits for three weeks.

While liposuction can be used for the early stages of gynecomastia, more advanced stages of gynecomastia may require tissue excision.  In this procedure your plastic surgeon will remove excess skin and gland tissue that may not be removed with the liposuction procedure.

Your plastic surgeon will endeavour to make the incision points and inconspicuous as possible and typically these will be in the natural chest fold. The procedure will be done under a general anaesthetic and you will be required to rest up for seven days before returning to work.  There may be some soreness and swelling for the first few days but simple pain medications will help with this.  You will also be required to wear a compression garment and refrain from excessive exercise, or strenuous activity for up to three weeks after surgery.

There may be some loss of sensation in the chest initially but this may gradually dissipate over the coming weeks and months.

As this is supposed to be a permanent solution to gynecomastia your plastic surgeon will advise you as to what steps you need to do to keep your new appearance.

It is advisable to only choose a board certified surgeon who is experienced in this procedure.  If you would like to know more about what our surgeons can do for you please contact us.
